MILLENNIUM - Coaching & Performance Feedback Series in Training Media Review

MILLENNIUM - Coaching & Performance Feedback Series, 3 videos, Quality Media Resources (800-800-5129, fax 425-462-7087). Other material: facilitator's guide and handouts.

These three videos from the Millennium series each have a different topic and function. The first video depicts eight different coaching scenarios, each lasting seven minutes; the second is a 15-minute video on the Leader as Coach; and the third is a 15-minute video on Providing Performance Feedback. The organization of the scenarios is a trainer's dream. Each presents a fairly common workplace dilemma: being late, resisting change, providing support, dealing with negative attitudes, maximizing employee potential, managing uncomfortable personal situations, giving feedback, and getting feedback. After the dilemma is role-played, three choices for dealing with the situation are offered, and the viewer is given a choice as to which one to put into practice. However, unlike traditional videos that depict such decision points, this video actually explores the alternatives, providing brief comments from experts about the pros and cons of each choice, and then shows the potential results of each choice. The advantage for a trainer using this video to improve coaching options for trainees is that the video can be stopped at any point along the way. Trainees can talk about how they would handle the situation or they can see how their approach is the same as or different from the experts' recommendation. By including the additional sections on how leaders can be coaches and how performance can be improved by feedback, this video can expand both leader and team member knowledge of the impact and value of coaching. Although Leader as Coach and Providing Performance Feedback are mostly talking-head videos, the comments selected for this video are practical, insightful, and based more on experience than on theory.

Recommendation
Trainers will find the Millennium videos are worthwhile tools for establishing or strengthening coaching. The efficiency and precision with which the ideas are presented and the way in which the videos can be used will make them suitable for all levels of the workplace and for both new and experienced workers. But series isn't just about coaching. Anyone interested in teaching feedback and performance improvement will also find the videos valuable.
